A few of my ocean creatures for . We call this planet Earth but it is more than 70% ocean; the continents and islands are the exception not the rule on what is mainly an ocean planet. The oceans are the biggest biosphere, a huge driver of climate, a major source of food, medicine, life and livelihood for many. 🧵1/n

My Portuguese man o’ war linocut is printed in blues, turquoise, violet and pink on white 9.25” by 12.5” Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. The float is above the water surface, the tentacles below.

This day aims to bring attention to human impacts on the ocean with the goal of working towards ocean and well-being. Between the impacts of climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, shipping, over-fishing we humans are acting like the oceans can take any abuse we dole out. But without a healthy world ocean, we risk not only marine life but our own which are intimately tied to the fate of the ocean. 🧵2/3

My linocut print shows the firefly squid against a white background on the left side of the square so you can see the whole animal and then its reflection is shown on the right against dark blue so you can see how its bioluminescence would appear underwater with fluorescent blue spots. On the left it’s a deep orange-pink squid with large gold and black eye. On the right you can see its body is covered with bright blue spots. The print is 8" x 8" (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm) on white Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

The prints are some of my recent favourites amongst many ocean creatures: my Portuguese man-o-war linocut, my octopus cyanotype printed from my linocut, the bioluminescent firefly squid linocut and the humpback whale linocut.

This lino block print of a humpback whale is printed in white and grey ink on lovely handmade paper in a deep blue. The paper has a little texture and there is a little white “chatter” (carving marks) around the whale.
