*Moment of #COVID education at the doctor’s office*
When I got to the office, I requested masking as an accommodation. The tech came in wearing an N-95.
Tech: Are you sick?
Me: No
Tech: Then why are you wearing a mask?
Me: So I don’t get COVID
Tech: What is this? *points to my HEPA filter*
Me: It’s a HEPA filter. It reduces viral load in the air, including COVID particles
Tech: Oh, we should get those for the patient rooms
Me: Great idea!

*Tech returns after I meet with the doctor, now wearing a surgical mask
Me: Why did you change your mask?
Tech: Since you don’t have COVID, I didn’t need to wear that mask
Me: You don’t know for sure I don’t have COVID, because as many as half of COVID cases are asymptomatic. And that mask does a better job of protecting you and your patients from COVID than the surgical one.
Tech: Nobody wears a mask anymore. You know that, right?

Me: That’s probably why 2,000 people have died per week from COVID for the past few weeks
Tech: Really? They don’t show that on the news anymore
Me: No, they don’t. But people are still dying from it.
Tech: You must have gotten COVID before and had a bad experience.
Me: Yes, I did, but it’s really about how each time you get COVID, you’re more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke, even if you were completely healthy before. That’s why I mask.

It’s hard to see healthcare professionals be so uninformed, but I’m glad she was at least open to learning more. Don’t be afraid to speak up!
