@actuallyautistic @joelle I agree. Apparently my doctor told my mum he suspected I had Aspergers (as it was then) when I was fifteen. She kept that to herself and maintained I had all these issues because someone had put black magic on me.

It wasn't until my late twenties when I learnt about Aspergers properly. If I had known at fifteen, I could have got my diagnosis, I could have got support (maybe) and at least not spent another 12 years hating myself and wondering why I just couldn't fix myself and be like the other women.

Reminder: If you're marginalizing ppl bc they're not using alt text, you're being #abelist.

Some ppl who are neurodivergent in a way that makes alt text impossible. You telling them to "just try harder" or excluding then is no diff than telling blind ppl to "look harder" or paraplegics to "just walk.

Stop valuing ppl with #neurodivergent traits as less important than ppl with physical challenges. Haven't we marginalized #neurodivergence enough?

If you didn't know, now you know.

Given the climate in the US, it might be worth considering whether a professional diagnosis is better than a self diagnosis. Weigh up the pros and cons.

I found this list to be useful. Copy it into a word processor or print it off and highlight all the ones you see in yourself. I did that, and got my ex to highlight what he saw in me. Before that I did used to doubt, but seeing that made me realise that I do have a lot of autistic traits (already got fobbed off once when trying for a diagnosis years ago, so I'm trying again).

There's also the raads-r test and a few other good ones on Embrace Autism, and idrlabs.com has a few that give you a cool pie chart. I find the AQ ones to be meh, the questions are too open for interpretation, but my GP required it before he could refer me.

www.autism.org.ukSigns that a child or adult may be autisticThe signs that people notice in children and adults are usually consistent with the core characteristics of autism, but this isn’t always obvious.

The hardest part about unmasking is developing the courage and resilience to act against the interest of another person (usually by upholding a personal boundary you've ignored so far) and to then striking the right balance in determining who deserves an explanation (because they actually want to listen) and who is a lost cause and just wants you to admit that you're wrong.

It's a really odd thing to go through when so far you've tried to please everyone. Who are you to put your judgement over the judgement of other people?

Please join us for this one-day conference on research and practice on #religion, #disability and #neurodivergence (focusing on social scientific research but anyone with an interest is welcome)! Online or in London, UK. Also I am the keynote speaker so don’t make me talk to an empty room. Or do. I’m not sure which is more nerve-wracking just now. (Yes, it’s my first keynote, why do you ask?) britsoc.co.uk/groups/study-gro

I'm an American from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (and a few other places like Alaska and Washington DC) living in Ireland with my husband. I like exploring the history and the places of natural beauty that surround us here. Finished up MSc Psy with the Open University (Experience of trauma and growth with connection to identity in neurodivergent adults). Now studying Integrative Psychotherapeutic Studies at IICP College in Dublin. I have lived a bunch of lives in my 65 years. Ask me and I'll tell you more. Well met.
